Background of the Study

Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, enabling journalists to hold power accountable and inform the public without undue interference. However, media laws designed to regulate the industry can sometimes curtail press freedom, creating tension between legal oversight and journalistic independence. In Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, the interplay between media laws and press freedom reflects broader national debates about balancing regulation and liberty. Recent studies highlight the dual impact of media laws: while promoting ethical journalism, restrictive policies often undermine critical reporting and limit access to information (Ahmed & Musa, 2023; Bello, 2024). This study investigates the impact of media laws on press freedom in Sokoto South, exploring the implications for journalistic practices and democratic governance.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the existence of media laws aimed at promoting professionalism, journalists in Sokoto South face challenges such as censorship, harassment, and legal restrictions that hinder press freedom. These issues compromise the media's ability to serve as a watchdog and uphold democratic principles (Okoro & Ibrahim, 2023; Yusuf, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the extent to which media laws affect press freedom, identifying gaps in the regulatory framework and proposing solutions to enhance journalistic independence.
